Entering the work force for young adults:

Billw@projectAcademy.org

Project Academy is a 501 (C)3 non-profit corp. whose purpose is to serve the community by successfully preparing entry level people & high school students to be productive in the work environment, education & society organizations.  Our students see themselves as owners of their own business with a positive attitude, caring for the customers with continuous improvement and looking to learn and get better at what they do.

Our pre-employment program is designed to give young adults, who dropped out of school or have graduated HS and have little direction, the life skills and attitude to become part of the community. The program is designed to include the community and business partners to insure success for the individual.  Needs of the young adult will be assessed; such as transportation, family commitments, legal and others to make the training possible and successful.

Business Needs:

Businesses are reporting that a major need for their success are employees with life skills such as; interpersonal skills, communication skills, teamwork, critical thinking and problem solving.  Our program intends to work with local businesses to insure that we provide these skills in addition to a positive attitude and seeing problems as opportunities.

The Future of Work Requires Non-Technical Expertise

As advanced technologies automate our world in more ubiquitous ways, we naturally assume that technical skills will be in the highest demand in the future job market. But as revealed in a recent report from the World Economic Forum (WEF), among many other studies, the rise of ever-smarter machines demands a surge in the social and emotional abilities machines cannot master. Soft skills such as adaptability, creative thinking, persuasion, relationship mastery, the ability to deal with complexity, and time management are increasingly valuable to companies as they become more dynamic, interconnected, and flexible by necessity. However, HR professionals report difficulty recruiting candidates who have these very skills!

Get young adults excited about learning (life-long learners).

Have the reasoning skills to manage in today’s society and begin to build a set of skills to use in multiple careers.

Understand that problems are opportunities.  The bigger the problem, the bigger the opportunity.

Have young adults better prepared for society and a career.

Our   Beliefs             (Tenants)

1. People will change careers equally as jobs in their life-time.

2.  Life-skills are transferable between careers/jobs

3.  Think of yourself as in your own business.  … Your boss is your customer.  Build your brand.

4.  Problems are opportunities … the bigger the problem the bigger the opportunity.  Vinod Khosla

5.  Use the engineering mind-set to focus on all the activities around your normal position.

6. Young adults have the capability but need the environment to dream

The program is designed to focus on the soft-skills needed in work and society in a four (4) week time frame.  It will cover the skills needed at work and in society in such important areas of teamwork, attitude, planning, problem solving and communications.

The Cohort will start off with one or two teams of ~5 students each

Mindset Thinking:  Our uniqueness.
Owners mindset thinking:  Students are shown how to be an owner of their own business; what’s involved with their customers, suppliers and staff. Thinking like an owner allows you to interface and understand your boss and constantly improving your skills.

Engineering mindset thinking Activities around the process that cover all the details to make it successful. Its assuring that all the team are aware of items, deliverables are met, problems solved, and the customer is informed.

Growth mindset Brain Plasticity… The brain is like a muscle … Use it or lose it.

Ghana think tank Ghana ThinkTank’s innovative approach to public art reveals blind spots between otherwise disconnected cultures, challenges assumptions about who is “needy,” and turns the idea of expertise on its head by asking people in the “third world” to solve problems of people in the “first world.” This process helps people overcome their own stereotypes while being exposed to the stereotypes that other cultures have about them.
